Snowy Tree Cricket

Snowy Tree Cricket

Last night a Snowy Tree Cricket was calling fervently outside my bedroom window at about 9 p.m. Also known as the “thermometer cricket” you can use the chirping rate to estimate air temperature.  For  degrees Celsius, count the number of chirps in 8 seconds and add 5.  I counted 20 chirps in 8 seconds which would have made the air temperature about 25C. The thermometer indicated 23C, so that’s pretty close! Listen here.
