Early spring Great Blue Heron at Little Lake (Bill Wilcox)

Early spring Great Blue Heron at Little Lake (Bill Wilcox)

Today, we saw a Great Blue Heron flying over Cumberland Avenue in the North End of Peterborough at about 1 p.m. It was heading south. Are they still supposed to be around,  what are they eating?

(Every year a few herons linger in the Kawarthas until almost Christmas – sometimes later. There has been one at Beavermead in recent days. They are probably finding fish and possibly hibernating frogs in unfrozen sections of streams. They will also eat invertebrates like crayfish and even small mammals. To have survived the -18C temperatures of last week, the bird you saw must be well fed!  D.M.)
