NOTE: In a research study led by Dr. Erica Nol of Trent University, the owls are caught at night using fine netting and a CD player broadcasting recordings of the Saw-whet’s call. Any birds caught are untangled, weighed, measured, and banded. A key finding so far is that these owls are very nomadic. Saw-whets banded by Trent near Bobcaygeon, Ontario, have been re-caught in places as far away as Virginia, Maryland, Wisconsin and Missouri. D.M.
